Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Panmure District School, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the four walls of the classroom. Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) provides authentic, hands-on learning experiences that inspire curiosity, build confidence, strengthen relationships, and help students make meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them.

Our EOTC programme is an important part of our curriculum and supports students to develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to become confident, capable and resilient learners.

Why EOTC?

Education Outside the Classroom provides students with opportunities to:

What EOTC Looks Like at Panmure District School

Throughout the year, students participate in a wide range of learning experiences, including:

Where possible, these experiences are closely linked to classroom learning to ensure students gain the greatest educational benefit.

Camps and Outdoor Learning

As students move through the school, they have opportunities to participate in outdoor education experiences that encourage personal growth, teamwork and leadership.

These experiences may include:

• Overnight camps.
• Adventure activities.
• Survival and bushcraft experiences.
• Water-based activities.
• Team challenges.
• Environmental education.
• Leadership development.

These programmes provide students with opportunities to challenge themselves, develop resilience and create lifelong memories alongside their classmates.

Learning Safely

The safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority.

All EOTC activities are carefully planned and follow the Ministry of Education’s EOTC Guidelines. Risk assessments are completed for all activities, appropriate supervision ratios are maintained, and all staff and volunteers are briefed before events take place.

Parents and caregivers receive information about upcoming activities and are asked to provide consent where required.

Working Together with Our Community

Many of our EOTC experiences would not be possible without the support of our whānau and wider community.

We value the time and expertise of our parent volunteers who assist with trips, camps and school events. Their support enriches learning opportunities for our students and helps create memorable experiences.

Every excursion, camp, sports event, cultural experience and outdoor adventure provides students with opportunities to grow in confidence, develop new skills, build strong relationships and discover their potential.

At Panmure District School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it continues wherever curiosity, challenge and opportunity can be found.

Senior Camp Programme

One of the highlights of our Education Outside the Classroom programme is our annual Senior Camp for Year 7 and 8 students. These camps provide unforgettable experiences that develop resilience, independence, teamwork and leadership while creating lifelong memories.

To provide students with a variety of experiences, our Senior Camp operates on a two-year cycle:

• Odd Years – PDS Survivor Camp (Tawharanui Regional Park)
  Our unique PDS Survivor Camp challenges students to step outside their comfort zones through outdoor adventure, survival skills, team challenges and water-based activities. Students learn to work collaboratively, build confidence and demonstrate resilience while enjoying the beautiful natural environment of Tawharanui.
• Even Years – Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (MERC)
  Students attend the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (MERC), where they participate in a professionally facilitated outdoor education programme. Activities may include kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, high ropes, environmental education and a range of adventure-based learning experiences designed to develop leadership, perseverance and teamwork.

Our Senior Camp programme is designed to build capable, confident young people who are willing to challenge themselves, support others and embrace new opportunities. These experiences align closely with our vision of Working Together to Grow Innovative, Confident, Resilient Leaders and are often remembered by students as one of the highlights of their time at Panmure District School.
